Focusmate — 1-on-1 video body doubling

Platform for 1-on-1 video body doubling, 25/50/75 min sessions, automatic matching with partners worldwide. The benchmark for virtual coworking.

Official site → freemium · 3 free sessions/week. $9.99/month for unlimited (~£8 / ~€9). web · macos · windows

What it is

Focusmate pairs you with a human partner (not an AI) for a 1-on-1 video work session. You book a slot (25, 50 or 75 minutes), the platform finds someone in your time window, you show up on video, each of you announces what you’re going to do, you work in silence (mics muted, cameras on), then you do a short check-out at the end.

Who it’s for

If you’re stuck on tasks you know you have to do but can’t start — admin, email, filings, tax returns, revision — Focusmate is probably the most powerful intervention for the least initial effort.

ADHD-optimal setup

  1. Create an account. Minimal profile (first name + optional photo).
  2. Book a session 12-24h in advance. The short delay stops you cancelling last minute with “not now”.
  3. Pick a slot where you’re functionally ok (not 7am if you’re a night owl).
  4. One hour before: prep your task (one clear goal only) + your environment.
  5. Your first session will feel weird. Normal. The 2nd and 3rd will feel natural.

Verdict

One of the rare tools that genuinely makes a difference for most ADHD adults. The free plan (3 sessions/week) is enough to try it out and for light use. The paid tier ($9.99/month) is worth it if you’re doing 2+ sessions/day.

Alternatives: Flow Club (more community-driven), free Discord servers, body doubling with a friend over video call.
